Job Summary

AECOM’s Middle East and Africa Environment team is looking to recruit an ESIA professional to join our South African team. In particular, we are looking for an individual with experience in working on ESIAs within the extractives, infrastructure and related sectors, preferably on international projects for global clients. The successful candidate will have a track-record of successful project delivery and client management, with strong technical skills. Past experience in the direction and management of baseline studies and technical assessments completed by sub-contractors beneficial.

We are looking for someone that will be able to take a key project delivery role within a vibrant and diverse team; helping us to continue to deliver a high quality service to existing clients and to expand our market share in new and developing geographies and services.

Our Environment & Planning business comprises currently comprises over 25 people and is rapidly to service significant projects in the region. We have offices in Centurion, Durban, Cape Town, Dubai, Abi Dhabi, Bahrain, Doha, Riyadh, Jeddah and Al Khobar.

We provide support to clients at all stages of the development process, including feasibility, optioneering, promotion through planning and project implementation.

Our ESIA teams often work very closely with our engineering and design colleagues, who are delivering the sort of exciting projects you would expect from a global environmental and engineering consultancy with a reputation for developing and implementing innovative solutions to the world’s most complex challenges.

We have an enviable client base which includes major international companies, including Eskom, SANRAL, Prasa, TCTA, Transnet, GSEZ, Dubai Ports World, BP, Shell, Exxon, TOTAL and Tullow Oil, Saudi Arabia’s Private investment Fund, ADA among many others.

The following provides a sample of our recent and current projects:

Rovuma ESIA update to international standards including repeating selected base level studies and development of EMP’s with EXXON Mobil.

ESIA for Total in Namibia for Offshore Exploration.

ESIA programme for the Red Sea Development Company for the Saudi Governments Private Investment Fund.

Various smaller scale environmental and social projects including for ESKOM, TCTA, Transnet and Sanral.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the following illustrative roles and responsibilities:

  • Assist in the management of and support in the delivery of ESIA projects to ensure projects are delivered on time and to the highest standard

  • Understand and implement project management principles and fully appreciate the need to work within project budgets

  • Assist in the project management and preparation of project documents including Scoping Reports and related technical studies in accordance with project timescales

  • Assist in the production of ESIA reports, and Non-Technical Summaries

  • Analyse data effectively and carry out desk based studies when required

  • Assist with the planning and execution of baseline surveys

  • Assist with the definition of scopes of work for technical studies and review of the completed studies

  • Participate in team meetings and other meetings as and when required

  • Prioritise project actions and meet commitments on an on-going basis while taking ownership and responsibility for the quality and completion of work

  • Assist in the production of ESIA Work Plans, Survey Execution Plans and other Project Management documents as required

  • Keep up to date with relevant environmental legislation, policy and guidance

  • Research issues as part of the ESIA process and to provide ideas, solutions and expertise to the ESIA team

  • Support business development through assistance with the production of Expressions of Interest and tenders, and to continuously improve our service offering for our clients

  • Understand and comply with quality and health & safety requirements and ensure these are addressed throughout a project

Minimum Requirements

  • Experience in ESIA in the oil and gas and/or infrastructure sector

  • Highly motivated and able to work with limited direction

  • Excellent technical and communication skills

  • Competency in a second language, spoken including French, Russian, Spanish or Arabic, would be advantageous.

  • You will be required to travel internationally, occasionally at short notice, but will be UK based.

Preferred Qualifications

  • You will have a good first degree and a second degree in an appropriate environmental, scientific or engineering discipline.
